??????????Stellenbosch 万博体育官网 provides an Occupational Health Service (OHS) as part of Campus Health Service (CHS).  The specialist team provides independent advice and services to staff and postgraduate students concerning the relationship between health and work, and the effect which the one has on the other.

We work to prevent work-attributable ill-health by advising on the control of potential health hazards at work, detecting occupational disease at an early stage, and advising on ill-health in the workplace.

Explore the sections below to discover the full range of services we provide to the 万博体育官网.

Please also have a look at the Employee Wellness page? for further information from Human Resources.

??

?

?

As well as its own defined role, the OHS team works jointly with other central services, such as Human Resources and Facilities Management, to maintain the health, safety and welfare of all employees at the 万博体育官网.

The OHS supports the 万博体育官网 in complying with health and safety legislation, conditions of employment legislation and forms part of the 万博体育官网's risk management process.

We maintain a high level of confidentiality and the service is at no cost to the individual.

Health Risk Assessment (HRA??)?

?The objective of occupational HRA is to identify all relevant health hazards and the degree to which the various occupations are exposed to these hazards. Risk is the product of both the hazard (the capacity to cause harm) and the extent of exposure.

An occupational health risk assessment is a systematic procedure to identify potential health hazards, evaluate the extent of exposure, subjectively and/ or objectively, and to establish the need for, and the effectiveness of control measures.  Furthermore, the occupational health risk assessment is also intended to facilitate the drafting of occupational hygiene monitoring programmes, medical surveillance programmes and occupational health education and awareness programmes.?

Health Surveillance ?

Baseline (pre-assignment) health status, including the assessment of emotional status, is assessed before making recommendations regarding the assignment of a new or current employee to a job to ensure that the individual can perform the job safely and without endangering the safety of others. This recommendation shall be based on any or all of the following:

  • medical history;
  • occupational history (complete work history);
  • assessment of the organs or systems likely to be affected by the assignment;
  • evaluation of the description and demands of the job to which the assignment is being considered; and
  • compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act or other pertinent regulations.

The health status of the employee is reviewed periodically (medical surveillance) where there is a likelihood that workplace exposures or activities could have an adverse health effect. This review may be limited to those organs or systems likely to be affected.

The health status of the employee is re-evaluated following prolonged absence from work due to illness or injury (post-illness or injury assessment). The goal is to ensure that the individual has sufficiently recovered from the illness or injury to perform their job, without undue risk of adverse health or safety effects to the individual or others. The questions we ask include: Should an employee return immediately to fulltime unrestricted duty? Should the employee return on a restricted basis?

Health Risk Management

This is necessary to ensure the program meets its objective effectively. The mechanism for this will vary as directed for the particular risk. Periodic review is necessary to make sure that the highest standards are met, appropriately.

Protocols:

??Incapacity Management

Effective management of sickness absence, ill-health at work and incapacity means:

  • informing employees of the procedure(s) to follow in the event of ill-health;
  • identifying concerns and problems at the earliest stage possible;
  • making employees aware that the 万博体育官网 understands that employees may occasionally be afflicted by illnesses that prevent them from attending work, and will assist the employee in any way that is reasonable to ensure a successful return to work;
  • creating awareness of sickness absence consequences;
  • promoting health and safety, and welfare of employees.?
Please find the Stellenbosch 万博体育官网 Guidelines for Managing Incapacity due to Ill Health here?.?

Disa?bility Management and S?upport

?The Employment Equity Act requires employers to:  eliminate discrimination, victimisation and harassment; to promote equality of opportunity for employees with a disability; and foster good relations between people with a disability and others who do not. Employers should take positive steps to ensure that people with disabilities can access and progress in employment. OHS will offer support and assessments when required for all individuals with disability.

????????????Our doors officially opened in 1974 as a student health service. Since then the service has evolved into a professional academic support service where staff and students are welcome.

At CHS we focus to promote quality of life, healthy development, positive health behaviours and to increase the campus community's awareness and understanding about health diseases and disability.

We ensure compliance to health related statutory requirements in the workplace, safe participation and performance enhancement of SU athletes; and provide quality control and medical emergency services.

Our institutional home is in the Responsibility Centre (RC) for Social Impact, Transformation and Personnel?.

Although our main focus is the provision of primary health care to the institutional community, CHS also provides the executive management of SU with health information that may have an impact on the strategic objectives of the institution. We are also represented in many high-level institutional committees such as the Risk Management Committee, the Health Care Committee, the Staff and Student Wellness Committees, the Equity and Diversity Committee, and Institutional Planning Forum.?

According to the WHO, depression is a common mental disorder and one of the main causes of disability worldwide.

Globally, an estimated 350 million people are affected by depression.  Determinants of mental health and mental disorders include not only individual attributes such as the ability to manage one's thoughts, emotions, behaviours and interactions with others, but also social, cultural, economic, political and environmental factors such as national policies, social protection, standards of living, working conditions, and community support.  Stress, genetics, nutrition, perinatal infections and exposure to environmental hazards are also contributing factors to mental disorders.

??

HIV/AIDS

HIV screenings is available upon patient request.  The clinical nurse practitioner does the testing.  Doctors may also refer patients for testing as part of their routine health check-ups.

Testing consists of finger-prick test.  If the test should come back as positive, a confirmation test as well as a blood test is done.  Patients are counselled through each step of testing.

TREATMENT 每 patients are referred either to the nearest local clinic or a private physician (depending on their preference) for the appropriate treatment regime.

PREVENTION 每 the best way to prevent HIV is to practice safe-sex i.e. use condoms.  Pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis can be prescribed.  It is also important to know your status 每 regular HIV-testing is recommended.

Tuberculosis?

If TB is suspected, the doctor or clinical nurse practitioner may request testing (persistent cough for more than 4 weeks, night sweats, weight loss, contact with a person who has TB).  Patients may also request that TB tests be done based on the above symptoms.  Pulmonary (lung) TB tests are conducted with sputum samples.  These samples are collected on 2 or 3 consecutive mornings before the patient has had anything to eat or drink.  Chest x-rays may also be done, but we do not diagnose TB off an x-ray.

TREATMENT 每 TB is a notifiable disease.  Patients who test positive are referred to the nearest local clinic for treatment.  This is to ensure that the Department of Health's guidelines are adhered to.  Treatment may vary from 6 每 12 months depending on the type of TB diagnosed.  It is important for patients to remember that they need to complete the full course of treatment to ensure that they recover and to prevent the spread of drug-resistant TB.

PREVENTION 每 always practice cough etiquette by covering your cough with a tissue, handkerchief or your hands.  Make sure that you wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into them.  Ensure that there is sufficient ventilation in the areas that you work and live.  If you have any of the signs suggestive of TB, get yourself tested.  If you are on treatment for TB, please complete the treatment course.

?This is a resource page for everyone who wants to get healthier by being more active.

EIM Header.png

Exercise is not the same as sport. The Oxford dictionary defines exercise as &physical or mental activity that you do to stay healthy or become stronger* or &a set of movements or activities that you do to stay healthy or develop a skill.

Sport is ※activity that you do for pleasure and that needs physical effort or skill, usually done in a special area and according to fixed rules§ i.e. sport is organized exercise.

The objective of exercise is increased physical movement, whether it is wheeling your wheelchair, going around the park on your crutches, or for most people simply walking.

The goal is to accumulate enough minutes of exercise to get health benefits.

For most people moderate intensity exercise gives the greatest benefit and is safe.

The sing / talk test: ?While you are exercising e.g. walking, try and sing out loud

  • If you can fill your lungs with enough air to sing, you are in light intensity exercise.
  • If you cannot sing but can hum / whisper singing, then try talking. If you can talk albeit a bit out of breathe, you are in moderate intensity exercise.
  • If you cannot talk at all, you are in high intensity exercise. Be sure to warm up and cool down properly if you go to high intensity exercise. If you have underlying health problems, first consult with your doctor before pushing yourself into this intensity. It is safe to stay in the moderate zone. ?
