Birkholtz Group?

The Birkholtz lab (B-lab) is a dynamic, collaborative group working at the interface of biology and drug discovery to address health problems relevant to Africa. We mainly work on malaria parasites. In light of emerging infectious diseases, the ability to eliminate age-old scourges like malaria is even more important. Malaria is still the most lethal tropical infectious disease and is particularly devastating on the African continent. Our work focuses on solution-oriented research to create health innovations for malaria elimination and to address the societal challenges associated with the disease in South Africa and globally.

We focus on the most deadly of the human malaria parasites, Plasmodium falciparum.  We work at the interface between parasite biology and drug discovery and use the new biological insights we gain from studying different life cycle forms of the malaria parasite as a catalyst for drug discovery.  We focus on the pathogenic processes driving the proliferation and differentiation of malaria parasites.  Our expertise lies in identifying chemical entities that block malaria parasite transmission between humans and mosquitoes. If we can achieve this, we will be able to stop the spread of the disease and, as such, contribute new tools to malaria elimination strategies. ?

BIOPEP????? Pepti?edgroep?

Die BIOPEP Peptiedgroep ondersoek weerstand teen, meganisme van werking en struktuur-aktiwiteitsverwantskappe (SAV) van antimikrobiese peptiede en membraanaktiewe antibiotika, met behulp van beide natuurlike en unieke sintetiese verbindings. Hierdie antimikrobiese verbidings is gerig teen 'n aantal van teikens soos weerstandige bakteri?le patogene,  in die besonder Listeria monocytogenes, swam plantpatogene, sowel as parasiete wat malaria (Plasmodium falciparum) veroorsaak?.


De Villiers Groep

Die De Villiers groep ondersoek Ko?nsiem A biosintese en benutting as 'n moontlike teiken vir die ontwikkeling vir nuwe antiparasitiese middels. Op die oomblik fokus ons hoofsaaklik op Plasmodium spp. deur gebruik te maak van 'n Chemiese Biologie benadering.


Strauss Groep??

Die Strauss Lab se kernnavorsingspogings is in die multidissip?linêre veld van Chemiese Biologie. Ons fokus hoofsaaklik op die chemie en biologie van die alomteenwoordige metaboliese kofaktor ko?nsiem A, en op lae molekulêre gewig tiol-afhanklike redoksbiologie. Ons pas ook die kundigheid wat ons op hierdie wyse verkry toe op die ontwerp en ontwikkeling van nuwe antimikrobiese middels - veral middels wat siektes teiken wat in die Afrika- gesondheidskonteks belangrik is, soos malaria en tuberkulose.


Zininga Groep

Die Zininga Groep fokus op die ondersoek van die rol van molekulere begeleiders in proteienvouding in selle onder stres. Ons hooffokus is op die malaria agente Plasmodium spp. Die parasiete is afhanklik van robuuste proteienvoudingsmasjinerie vir hulle oorlewing in stresvolle omgewings. Ons hoop om die parasiet se proteienvoudingsisteem beter te verstaan en ons beoog om hierdie kennis toe te pas op ander siektes.
