The Division of Medical Virology conducts a diverse range of clinical and basic research, focusing on various viruses, including but not limited to HIV, viral hepatitis, emerging and re-emerging viruses, viral metagenomics, SARS-CoV-2, and the association between viruses and sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI). 

In addition to these research areas, the Division actively participates in several collaborative initiatives with partners across South Africa, other African countries, and international institutions.

Each senior researcher within the Division pursues specific thematic areas of interest, recruiting and supervising students at all academic levels, from Honours to PhD. The Division also accepts postdoctoral fellows. Detailed information about the research themes can be found on the individual profiles of our personnel.
